Cultural Centre, Baron’s Quay, Northwich

In early 2009 the practice entered the competion for the design of a new Cultural Centre to be located at Baron's Quay, Northwich.

The concept for the project was rooted in Northwich's historic link to the salt industry and provides a study into the isometric crystal formations of he colourless, clear Halite (commonly known as rock salt), which was mined locally. The result is a dynamic collision of cubic, transparent of translucent masses that could be liked to crystal structures and melting ice cubes.

The Auditorium and dance studio were sited in the largest of the cubic masses to provide an imposing, dynamic block to the corner of the centre, which will form an iconic view from the river and impressive backdrop to the entrance foyer. The Gallery and vertical circulation have been linked and are to be considered as transitional spaces that provide a hinge from the strong form of the auditorium to the restaurant and external terraces that overlook the external performance space adjacent to the River Weaver.
